Doctor’s Civil Disobedience Movement

By Kanavraj Singh Vilkhu

Ludhiana : There are many countries around the world facing Military Junta. These are the situations where the military personnel take over the entire country and take out the existing governments. Countries like Chad, Thailand, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Sudan, and Mali have the Junta Government. The latest country to have this kind of Governance is Myanmar.

Myanmar faces a Military coup, and every section of society is disturbed. The hospitals are being adversely affected by this type of Governance. The Doctors are pulled out of Operation Theatres in the middle of procedures and are charged with treason as they defy their Junta Government.

The previous month DR. Kyaw Swar resisted being involved with the Military Junta when he was interrupted by the military officers while operating on his patient. DR. Swar’s actions led the military to augment their arrests of doctors opposing the Junta. The doctors from almost every part of Myanmar oppose the new military laws and operate outside the state. They have been at the forefront of the protest for the last 14 months, ever since the military took over in Myanmar. The doctors have set up their medical camps on the outskirts of Myanmar in temples and monasteries. They are trying their best to treat their patients with all the limited resources they have with them. More than 70% of the doctors are part of the resistance. The Myanmar Military officers have arrested around 140 doctors till now. Out of these 140 doctors, 30 have been killed, according to New York bases physicians for Human Rights.

It is quite saddening that nearly 1million children cannot get routine immunisation due to the absence of Doctors. It makes the children prone to diseases like Measles. Also, around 5 million children have Vitamin A deficiency. Moreover, only 40% of the population has received the Covid-19 Vaccinations, putting every person at risk of getting infected with COvid-19 Vaccines.

The New York-based Physicians claimed that Myanmar is one of the most dangerous places to be a health worker. Myanmar’s military has severely destroyed almost every section of the society, which is beyond repair.
