Shanti Devi – Hoax or Legitimate?

Kanavraj Singh Vilkhu

Ludhiana : This can be a coincidence but what she mentioned later was most surprising that her husband’s cloth shop was near the Dwarkadish Temple in Mathura. These claims troubled her parents enormously.

When Shanti Devi’s headmaster knew about this, he decided to visit Mathura. Astonishingly, he could not just identify a person who used to have a clothing business near Dwarkadish Temple, but the other details also matched with Kedarnath Chaubey. Also, Kedarnath Chaubey had lost his wife nine years ago, who died after ten days of childbirth. So the headmaster decided to arrange a meeting of Shanti Devi with her past life’s husband. But there is a twist, Kedarnath Chaubey would come in his elder brother’s disguise and his son Navneet Lal. But Shanti Devi immediately recognised her husband and son. She mentioned everything until her death and some complicated surgeries Lugdi Bai went through.

Kedarnath Chaubey asked for permission to talk to Shanti Devi alone. After talking to her, Kedarnath was convinced that Shanti Devi was his wife, Lugdi Bai, because she told him such things that only Lugdi Bai knew. The story of Shanti Devi was gaining national attention. Since she was born in the pre-independence era, Mahatma Gandhi appointed a 15-member committee that included scholars, media personnel, and researchers to study Shanti Devi’s case.

The Committee, on 15th November 1935, took Shanti Devi to Mathura. When they reached the Mathura Station, the committee members asked to recognise a random person, and she identified him as Kedarnath Chaubey’s elder brother. She approached him and touched his feet. Later, when they reached Kedarnath’s home, Shanti recognised Lugdi Bai’s father-in-law standing in a crowd near the house. She also told the Committee about a spot where Lugdi Bai (Shanti Devi) hid some money, but no money was present there. Kedarnath Chaubey later confessed that he took out the money from the spot mentioned by Shanti Devi. The Committee later concluded that Shanti Devi is indeed Lugdi Bai only in the form of Reincarnation.

Some foreign researchers, such as DR. Ian Stevenson, also interviewed Shanti Devi, her parents, her husband from the past, and other important ones she mentioned. After concluding the research, DR. Ian said that she told him about 24 statements which were all true with facts. Shanti Devi was Lugdi Bai without a doubt.

Reincarnation stories are hard to believe true as one relies upon verifiable facts.  But if we consider the points and places mentioned by Shanti Devi, this is one of a few stories that indicate that Reincarnation does exist.
