Social Media Surges Social Unrest In Srilanka

Ludhiana : The predicament in Srilanka is yet to come to peace amid the protesters demanding the resignation of the Rajapaksa brothers, who are not in the disposition to resign soon.

To understand the crises, we need to look at the reasons for such devastating situations.

With the depletion of fuels, frequent power cuts, and shortage of cooking gas supply, the impact of the crisis is on all aspects of the country. In addition, inflation led to public unrest, gathering outside the Presidential Secretariat, even in scorching sun and thunderstorms.

A lot of reasons together comprise the condition in Srilanka. First, decisions made by the government, such as not providing chemical fertilisers to farmers, were an error that led to the farmer revolts.

Social media proved to be one of the substantial reasons for the riots becoming more vicious as Facebook intensified the riots by circulating fake news. Facebook also apologised for its role in the riots later.

Easter Day bombings have led to a decrease in the tourism rate, which has led to a reduction in GDP because 12- 13% of Srilanka’s GDP depends upon tourism.

The media is also printing less because of the scarcity of resources. The foreign reserves of Srilanka are incredibly severe, as Srilanka is a significant importer of all the resources, lack of foreign funds has led to the hike in all the prices of food items which is making people feel suffocating.

The need of the hour is inducing reforms that Srilanka urgently needs. Even though Srilanka has asked for financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), even India had also made articulations on behalf of Srilanka. India will also be impacted by the Economic crises in Srilanka, as the refugees fleeing from Srilanka to India will further impact us in different ways.
